The Story & Symbolism of the Christmas Poinsettia

With its vibrant red bracts and star-shaped form, the poinsettia has become one of the most iconic flowers of the festive season. Its association with Christmas began in Mexico, where the plant—known as La Flor de Nochebuena, or the “Flower of the Holy Night”—naturally blooms in winter.

According to legend, a young girl with no gift to offer at Christmas gathered humble roadside weeds. As she placed them at the altar, they miraculously transformed into brilliant red poinsettias—symbolising that love and sincerity are the greatest gifts of all.

Wow! What a lovely afternoon @chichestercityartscentre to wrap up our Christmas Wreath Workshops for 2025! Thank you again to the owners of this lovely venue for having me back three years on the trot.

A total of 71 Christmas wreaths were individually made by all my lovely participants from all five festive workshops these last couple of weeks. It’s been an absolute pleasure.

A massive thank you to the lovely Eve from @eveselegantflorals who has freelanced for me this year. 🎄 And not to mention a thank you to my husband Chris for all the support he’s given this month and doing solo parenting bedtimes with the little ones.

Thank you to each of the venues for having me and to all who took part this year.

For now, it’s a little rest from workshops (just a little rest) and maybe I’ll even treat my car to a good hoover.

I am still taking orders for custom wreaths, handmade with love by me, up until this Friday 12th December where I will then be taking some time off to enjoy the magic of Christmas with my husband and little ones ❤️

This English inspired meadow consisted of white lilies, hydrangeas, roses, delphiniums, campanulas and bright sunflowers, chrysanthemums and tanacetums, with an abundance of foliage for texture and whimsy. Created to encircle a beautiful wicker urn. 🌻

Here is just one of my beautiful brides, Mrs Collyer, who married her Mr Collyer a couple of weeks back at @upwalthambarns . She chose a very elegant bouquet of gypsophila and pink avalanche roses. I added lovely lisianthus just to keep the textures soft and balanced throughout.

A little update from me…

After much thought—and a little time to reflect over the Easter break—I’ve made the decision to step away from offering day-to-day online gift bouquets. It hasn’t been an easy choice, but it’s one that will allow me to focus more fully on my true passions: wedding flowers and creative workshops.

That said, I will still be offering bespoke, made-to-order gift bouquets, and you’ll still see seasonal arrangements available around key times of the year such as Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, and Christmas. I’ll also continue to provide sustainable funeral flowers, which remain a meaningful part of what I do.

I’m genuinely blown away by the continued support from all of you—my wonderful clients and customers. Your encouragement has helped shape and grow my little business into what it is today. As things continue to grow, so too does the behind-the-scenes workload. And as well as being a florist, I’m also a mummy to my little ones—so finding a healthy balance is really important.

I’ve got some truly beautiful weddings lined up this year and am fully booked from May through September, which I’m absolutely thrilled about! There’s limited availability from October to December, and I’m now taking bookings for 2026.

Stepping back from daily online orders will give me the space and time to focus on the other floral services I love and continue to offer. I feel incredibly grateful to be able to shape The Flower Hut into the business I’ve always dreamed of.

Dreamy meadow magic in full bloom.

I've been a little quiet on here. Two weeks off of flowering and time spent with my two little ones making Easter bonnets, decorating biscuits, hunting for eggs, spring trails and a little trip away with our caravan. Ate probably too much chocolate. Ooops! Back to flowers yesterday with a lovely dinner party flower commission for a beautiful house in Goodwood yesterday. And now, I have a lovely wedding to prepare for this weekend for a sweet couple. Please don’t forget! I now add little towels for when I deliver the bouquet off to my beautiful brides to set my mind at ease that I have done everything I can to remind the bride and her bridesmaids to wipe down the stems when they take them out of their vase. (It’s thirsty work being a wedding flower and I recommend they have a good drink whilst you’re getting ready as they have a big day ahead of them 🌸)

Please wipe down each stem to minimise the chance of getting sap residue on your beautiful dresses.

I suggest delegating a bridesmaid to be on towel duty. It’s a very important job! 🌸
